Brian P. Costello, AIF®
Chief Executive Officer

Brian brings over 25 years of financial expertise to The Waterford Group as our Chief Executive Officer. He has successfully guided individuals, institutions and retirement plans on investing their assets to accomplish diverse objectives. Brian holds the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® designation and works diligently to lead, differentiate and grow The Waterford Group.

After graduating with a B.S. in Finance from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY, Brian spent ten years with the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network before moving to Manning & Napier as a vice president and client consultant in 1997. Following time at Howe & Rusling, as a vice president, he moved to Genesee Valley Trust, in 2002, as the senior vice president of sales and marketing, becoming president in January 2010.

He's deeply involved in the community, serving on the Rochester Presbyterian Home Foundation and as a board member of the Small Business Council of Rochester.
When he's not financially involved, Brian enjoys time golfing and fishing. 

Michael J. Merriman, AIF®
Managing Director

Mike has been in the financial services and investment industry for over 15 years, after graduating with a BS in Business Administration from Villanova in 1992. His skill as a retirement plan advisor has consistently advanced, beginning at Paychex, Inc. where he started as a fixed-income trading assistant in their treasury department and continued to be promoted to positions as national sales support supervisor  (acknowledged as supervisor of the year in 2001 and 2002), and 401(k) sales representative.  He achieved the elite Circle of Excellence in 2005.

He joined Genesee Valley Trust in 2006 as the vice president responsible for the retirement service division and remained with GVT until January 2011. Today at The Waterford Group, Mike focuses on managing our retirement practice, and  holds the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® designation.

Mike is very active in the community as the director of the Chemo for Kids not-for-profit organization, a board member and golf chairman at Penfield Country Club, advisory committee member of Camp Good Days and Special Times,  a committee member of the CURE Kids Cancer golf event, and volunteers his time and knowledge as a coach for Penfield Little League and Perinton Youth Hockey.

Along with his wife, he parents four children and enjoys golfing and Villanova basketball. Mike is also a long time season-ticket holder for the Buffalo Sabres.

Mary K. O’Brian, AIF®

As relationship manager for Genesee Valley Trust from 2009 through early 2011, Mary was completely involved with her clients, hosting retirement plan enrollment and one-on-one meetings for 70+ clients and over 5,000 participants. Today, as our president, she remains completely in touch with our clients, managing new and ongoing relationships.

She gained tremendous business experience at Xerox Corporation, Rochester, serving as eastern region business manager for three years. There she managed all financial activities for five document technology center sites in three different states with annual revenues of over $30M. While with Xerox she was recognized with numerous awards, including two “Team Excellence” citations and three special recognition program awards.

Mary is deeply involved with her children’s school, having served as PTA president and treasurer for Cobbles Elementary School, and has also volunteered her time and talents with the Juvenile Diabetes Association, Perinton Youth Hockey, and Penfield Little League.

Mary also enjoys running, golfing, and skiing with her three children.
